Marlin Fishing Charters

When fished for properly the Marlin fishing off the Algarve coast of Portugal can be as good as any other destination in the world. The big blue marlin turn up around 50 miles out from the eastern end of the Algarve in June and travel down to the deep canyon of Portimao by mid August, staying around till 2nd week in October, depending on water temperatures. Size is very good and we catch very few under 500lbs with 'granders' ( 1,000lb fish) possible.

Barbel Fishing in Portugal

The Portuguese are not into barbel fishing in a big way as they are much more interested in fishing for black bass and zander which they take home to eat. To give you some idea of the fantastic potential for barbel fishing here in sunny Portugal I would like to share with you some of my knowledge and experiences built up after spending 21 years exploring the south of Portugal in the Algarve.

We have 6 distinctively different species of barbel, 5 grow to similar size as UK fish at around 20lbs but the big one is the monster Comizo which can grow to 45lbs. The Guadiana river - apart from a few areas close to towns like Serpa and Mertola, is virtually unfished, in fact for many miles, unless you have a boat, it is unfishable and offers the best opportunity to fish for and catch this leviathan.

alqueva-trip-catch-3-2013We have just managed to get in a short fishing trip at the end of the season for customers Mark Perkins and John Edwards. The Portuguese fishing season is very much in line with the old UK coarse closed season, with no coarse fishing again now until mid May.

The weather was gale force winds, but this did not effect the fishing. 1st day we arrived at the dam in the dark and put around 10kg of particle feed into a swim in preparation for next day. Following morning after a great evenings rest, we arrived around 9am after abreakfast to find the area full of feeding fish!

The sight was incredible, there were shoals with hundreds if not thousands of fish under the dam wall stretching for several hundred meters. The fishing was non stop all day with estimated 60+ fish to 12lbs. This continued till the end of this trip, fabulous fishing, shame it had to end.

tightlines-49.5-algarve-carpAt 11am today 16th Feb 2013 very shakily I slipped my net under what I could see was a very special fish for my fishing partner and fellow tightlines guide Tom.

It all started some 3 days earlier when we arrived at the water in glorious sunshine, typical of a Winter here in the Algarve, and started to locate the likely feeding areas for the carp and then set about baiting to attract any feeding fish. Our previous Winter trips had shown that there were always a group of large carp willing to feed throughout the Winter on this particular water.

To facilitate a longer session, I was in my transit van from which i have modified to allow me to have a mobile base from which to operate and to provide plenty of room for lots of gear. My mate and fishing partner Tom had come over in his Hymer camper with enough gear to stock a tackle shop, which he did have at one time.

Once we had located the likeliest spot out was went the Viper baitboat with our particle mix which was laced with tuna in oil, aniseed, chilly, salt and our secret additives and hook baits. With the help of the Viper's fishfinder Tom accurately dropped his bait in a spot in 6ft of water, just short of a bed of reeds around 180 yards across the bay we were fishing and the trap was set.

tight-tackle-web-promotionI'm pleased to announce that Tightlines Portugal now has a companion web site that will probably be helpful and useful to all the anglers who visit and browse this website.

visit: tightlines-tackle.com

The new web site is an online store selling quality carp and sea fishing tackle at very competitive prices, the range is ever expanding and follows a long history of selling these goods on eBay for around 14 years. Making the products directly available for sale in this way makes for an easier way to acquire it and for me to supply it without the delay and frustration of 'auctions' etc.

If you are carp angler, sea angler or just an 'angler' do take a look and see if we can save you a bit on the many small items that seem to cost more and more every season, I continue to add new items as I can access them at the right price, passing on those savings to you all.

Any regular visitors may remember that last year I mentioned receiving a request for help from a ex-pat Brit, Paul Golds, he had since first coming out really tried very hard to catch some good fish, but could not get past 17lbs which for years was the same for myself.

It took me over 10 years exploring, driving thousands of miles and fishing for several months every year to find a hand full of waters that have fish in over 20lbs. Well all I have to do was direct Paul to a couple of likely waters that I take my guests to and he applied his own approach to fishing these and has really had a terrific season.

I could say he has ripped them apart taking several 40lb + fish amongst a great run of quality fish.

The images above are just a sample of Paul's great fish and if you fancy coming out and having a crack at such quality fish in great locations and weather, when the weather is cold and bleak in the UK (November to March) then get in touch with me to find out what opportunities there here big carp fishing in the Algarve, Portugal.

Jan-2013-tripWith all the stress of the year behind us, the 'boss' says its OK as its 27th of December to get the rods out and I have been out fishing on a local big fish water.

My fishing mate Tom had this nice 26lb fish at 8am, followed by 2 smaller doubles in the afternoon - the weather was incredible for Winter with temperatures in the sun of 30c water temperature was 11c.

Something we wonder more anglers don't take advantage of and get out here for some great fishing in warm Winter conditions from November through to our close season in March. Take a look at our catches for the Winter over the last few seasons to see what you have been missing. Trust me the fish are getting bigger every season.

The fishings great, the weathers great, what are you waiting for?

Fancy a break - call me or contact me here:

Happy New Year.

John
