The Algarve is a good base for an excellent sea fishing holiday or for those on a family holiday looking for a break from the usual waterparks and tourist trail, and I would perhaps recommend 2 days freshwater fishing as that diversion. It is not a good base for a proper fresh water fishing holiday-too long a drive to the best fishing.

By contrast fishing in mainland Portugal for carp, is becoming difficult to put a top weight on the carp you can expect, as we continue to catch bigger fish and hear rumours of many bigger fish coming from some of the waters we fish in the Alentejo. As far as big cats go we understand that they have been put into the new Alqueva Dam, but it will be a while before they match those Spanish cats! A smaller species (5lb max) can be found in a few dams. A few pike have been taken from the river Guardiana and the Alqueva Dam.

If you are looking at coming out to Portugal, before you part with your hard earned cash, ask for recommendations, contact phone numbers of happy anglers from any one offering to take you fishing for pike or big cats or from anyone who offers you fishing for 70lbs carp in the Portugal. Carp around 50lbs yes, 60lbs possibly over that we are very doubtful, at present.

CARP FISHING:

This can be on easy waters where carp in the 2 lbs to 20lbs bracket are the main targets. Clients will learn the key techniques for these fish. We fish a 3,000 acre dam about a 1 hr. drive away. The fish respond to all sorts of methods and bags of 100lbs+ can often be made. Even in winter we can expect some good bags and great fun for beginners and expert anglers.

BEST CATCH LAST YEAR 19 CARP OVER 10 LBS TO ONE ANGLER IN ONE DAY.

BIG CARP:

This is a bit more hit and miss, but if clients want to go for Carp using big fish tactics there is one dam of 5,000 acres that I can take them to, where they have a chance. Big Carp are never guaranteed but they are there and of WORLD CLASS SIZE.

BARBEL:

We have 5 different species of Barbel and they grow to near 40lbs. Large bags of smaller fish are possible. Tench, Carp, Bass and Pike can be taken from the same river which is about a 2 hr. drive away.

PIKE:

This is a long trip away and we can bivvy up overnight and make a 2 or 3 day trip out of it, possibly have a barbecue on the side of the dam at night. There are also good carp in the same dam that we can fish for in the evenings.
