Alentejo BB Fishing Report

I met John and Dave from Banbury in the evening on their arrival at Faro airport, then took them to to our accommodation.

First 2 days we fished a large dam of around 4000 acres just out of town, taking plenty of small carp to 4.5lbs but did not get any interest from the big carp in the dam on boilies. Best catch was 65 carp for John on the second day, 100lb bags of these smaller carp are easy on this water.

Day 3, as John and Dave had never taken barbell before, I offered to take them to a secret spot on a local river, where we managed to catch 30 barbel between us, plus a few carp into the bargain.

Day 4 we moved to my back up water where john was soon into better sized cartp and was unfortunately smashed twice whilst fishing a weedy bay. Dave struggled as did I taking just a few small fish, losing a good fish at the net, taken on a boily. Despite this we decided that as there appeared to be some bigger fish about we would not make the mistake of moving on to another water in the morning, but instead decided to bait heavily and return the next day.

Day 5 could not have been more different to day 4, the fish were there and taking just about anything we could throw at them, lots of fish between 3 to 8lbs. Amongst these Dave managed to take fish of 11.5 and 15lbs. We fished till 6.00pm and then as previously decided to feed in lots of free offerings and to return the next day.

Day 6
and the last full days fishing for John and Dave and again the number of fish between 3 and 8lbs went uncounted as the activity was so intense that we just got on with the fishing. The day eventually ended and John and Dave confirmed that these Algarve carp fight twice as hard as their English cousins of similar size!

We did manage to get a few hours fishing in on the lads last morning before I had to take them to the airport at Faro, again catching plenty of fish to around 8lbs on float tackle.

The weeks fishing described here is typicalof what we catch in this area. There are much larger fish there but because of the size of the water and the large numbers of the smaller carp they take some get through to.

The weather was normal for October with 2 dull days with a little light rain, with 5 good days where we wore shorts and tee shirts, hats and sun glasses. It was that sunny that even sun cream was necessary. The weather here in the Algarve is like this all Winter  till the Closed Season here in mid march.
