Welcome to fishing in Portugal

view of beachWhen people say they are going to Portugal on holiday you normally think of good weather, great beaches with spectacular cliffs, some of the best golf in Europe, but what about the fishing?

We have some of the best unspoiled fishing in Europe. We have just had the world match angling championship in the north of Portugal where the Portuguese and Spanish showed us how good they are on there own waters. Down on the Algarve and in the next province up we have much different fishing, very rarely do we have any match fishing on fresh water as here the Portuguese are into sea fishing and very good at it they are to. We have the occasional match for Black Bass anglers using boats on our large dams and I do mean large. The new Alqueva dam has a shoreline of over 500 miles.

Most of the Portuguese are just not interested in fishing for Carp and Barbel because they are not good to barbecue. This is good for us as it means we have miles of fishing completely to ourselves. We catch Carp as easy, if not easier than you can catch Perch and Bream in Ireland. 50lbs to 100lbs+ catches can be expected all year and we have the weather to go with it.

So if you like good fishing in nice surroundings with lots of room to yourself then think about Portugal in the sun. With the introduction of cheap flights from England by either (www.easyjet.com or www.air2000.com). It is possible for a group of anglers to obtain return flights and car hire for only £100.00 each.
